Rahu Mahadasha: The 18-Year Period, Its Sub-Periods and House Placement
By VedicsAstro Editorial · 28 October 2026
In the Vimshottari Dasha system, the 120 years of a full life cycle are shared between the nine grahas in a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Rahu’s period of 18 years is the third longest, after Venus and Saturn. It follows the Mars Mahadasha and is followed by the Jupiter Mahadasha.
You are born in Rahu’s period if the Moon was in one of the three nakshatras Rahu rules — Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha. For everyone else, Rahu’s period arrives at some point in the sequence, and for many people it falls in the middle years of life.
What Rahu represents
Rahu is the north node of the Moon, a mathematical point rather than a physical body. Jyotish treats it as a shadow planet (chhaya graha) that stands for desire, ambition, the foreign and the unconventional, sudden change, technology, crowds and the wish for more. It has no sign of its own, and astrologers disagree about where it is exalted: some say Taurus, others Gemini.
A principle accepted by most astrologers is that Rahu gives the results of the planet that rules the sign it occupies, and of the planets it is joined with. Rahu in a sign of Jupiter behaves differently from Rahu in a sign of Saturn. This is why two people in the same Rahu period can have very different experiences.
Common themes of the period
- Strong ambition and a wish to rise quickly, often in a new or unusual field.
- Travel, work with foreign places or people, or a move away from home.
- Sudden opportunities and sudden reversals, sometimes in the same year.
- Interest in technology, media, research or anything outside the family tradition.
- Restlessness, confusion or dissatisfaction when the chart does not support Rahu well.
None of these is guaranteed. The same period can bring a person success abroad or a long stretch of uncertainty, and the rest of the chart decides which is more likely.
The nine sub-periods
Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas, beginning with the Mahadasha lord itself and then following the same Vimshottari order. Each sub-period lasts the Mahadasha’s years multiplied by the sub-lord’s years, divided by 120. For Rahu that gives approximately:
- Rahu–Rahu: about 2 years 8 months.
- Rahu–Jupiter: about 2 years 5 months.
- Rahu–Saturn: about 2 years 10 months.
- Rahu–Mercury: about 2 years 7 months.
- Rahu–Ketu: about 1 year 1 month.
- Rahu–Venus: 3 years.
- Rahu–Sun: about 11 months.
- Rahu–Moon: 1 year 6 months.
- Rahu–Mars: about 1 year 1 month.
Astrologers often single out Rahu–Jupiter as a steadier phase, because Jupiter is the natural benefic, and treat Rahu–Ketu, Rahu–Sun and Rahu–Moon with more care, because the nodes are linked with eclipses of the Sun and Moon. In practice, how each sub-lord sits in your own chart matters more than these general rules.
Rahu by house
- 1st house: a strong drive to reinvent oneself; attention to image and health.
- 2nd house: focus on money, family and speech; changes in family life or diet.
- 3rd house: traditionally a good placement — courage, initiative, media and short journeys.
- 4th house: changes of residence or property, distance from home, unrest in domestic life.
- 5th house: unusual ideas, speculation, study in new subjects; care is advised with children’s matters and risky investments.
- 6th house: traditionally a good placement — the ability to overcome rivals, competition and debts.
- 7th house: unconventional partnerships or a partner from a different background; business with foreign contacts.
- 8th house: sudden events, research, hidden matters and inheritance; a period to keep health and finances in order.
- 9th house: questioning of tradition, travel for study or faith, differences with teachers or father.
- 10th house: career ambition and public visibility; rapid rises are possible.
- 11th house: traditionally one of the best placements — gains, networks and fulfilled ambitions.
- 12th house: foreign residence, expenses, spiritual interest, and a need to guard sleep and spending.
The 3rd, 6th and 11th houses (upachaya houses, which improve with time) are generally considered the most comfortable places for Rahu. Read each house together with the sign and its lord: Rahu in the 10th in a friendly sign with a strong dispositor is very different from Rahu in the 10th with a weak, afflicted one.
Traditional remedies
The practices usually suggested for a difficult Rahu period are worship of Durga, recitation of the Rahu mantra, charity on Saturdays, and steady routines that keep a restless mind grounded. Hessonite (gomed) is Rahu’s stone, but many astrologers are cautious with it, because a stone strengthens a planet rather than calming it. These are traditional practices, not promises of a particular outcome.
