Ketu Mahadasha: The 7-Year Ketu Period
By VedicsAstro Editorial · 28 October 2026
Ketu’s Mahadasha lasts 7 years, the same length as Mars and among the shortest in the Vimshottari system after the Sun (6 years). Ketu opens the Vimshottari order, so it comes after Mercury’s 17-year period and before Venus’s 20-year period. You are born in Ketu’s period if the Moon was in Ashwini, Magha or Moola, the three nakshatras that Ketu rules.
What Ketu represents
Ketu is the south node of the Moon, the point opposite Rahu. Where Rahu reaches outward for more, Ketu turns inward and lets go. It is linked with detachment, spirituality, past habits and skills, research, intuition, healing, sudden endings and the search for meaning. Like Rahu, it has no sign of its own, and astrologers disagree about where it is exalted.
Most astrologers hold that Ketu gives the results of the lord of the sign it occupies, and of planets joined with it. It is often compared to Mars in its nature, so a Ketu period can be quick, sharp and decisive.
Common themes of the period
- A loss of interest in things that once mattered, and a wish to simplify.
- Spiritual practice, pilgrimage, meditation or study of philosophy.
- Sudden changes — a job ends, a move happens, a plan is dropped — that clear space for something else.
- Research, technical skill, healing work or detailed analysis.
- Confusion or a sense of drift when Ketu is poorly supported in the chart.
How long your Ketu period is
Not everyone experiences all seven years. If you were born in Ketu’s period, only the part that remained when you were born — the dasha balance — is counted, and it depends on how far the Moon had already moved through its nakshatra. Someone born with the Moon near the end of Ashwini, Magha or Moola may have only a few months of Ketu left, while someone born near the start has almost the full seven years.
Reading Ketu in your chart
Look first at the sign Ketu occupies and where its lord is placed, because Ketu largely acts through that planet. Then look at any planet joined with Ketu: with Jupiter it is often read as a strong spiritual combination, with the Moon it can bring a restless or anxious mind, and with Mars it can add force and speed to events. Finally, check Rahu in the opposite house, since the two nodes always work as a pair.
The nine sub-periods
The period begins with Ketu’s own sub-period and follows the Vimshottari order. With a Mahadasha of only 7 years, each sub-period is short:
- Ketu–Ketu: about 5 months.
- Ketu–Venus: about 1 year 2 months.
- Ketu–Sun: about 4 months.
- Ketu–Moon: 7 months.
- Ketu–Mars: about 5 months.
- Ketu–Rahu: about 1 year 1 month.
- Ketu–Jupiter: about 11 months.
- Ketu–Saturn: about 1 year 1 month.
- Ketu–Mercury: about 1 year.
Ketu–Venus and Ketu–Jupiter are often read as the more comfortable phases, if those planets are well placed. Ketu–Rahu, where the two nodes meet, is commonly handled with more care.
Ketu by house
- 1st house: a changing sense of identity and a quiet, inward manner.
- 2nd house: changes in family life, money or speech; a simpler diet or lifestyle.
- 3rd house: courage and initiative, often a comfortable placement.
- 4th house: detachment from home or property; changes of residence.
- 5th house: deep study, mantra and spiritual learning; care with speculation.
- 6th house: traditionally favourable — victory over rivals, good for healing work.
- 7th house: distance or changing expectations in partnerships.
- 8th house: research, hidden knowledge and sudden events.
- 9th house: questions of faith and tradition, pilgrimage, unusual teachers.
- 10th house: changes of career direction; work that is technical or behind the scenes.
- 11th house: traditionally favourable — gains, though often with less attachment to them.
- 12th house: often considered Ketu’s most natural place — spiritual practice, retreat, foreign lands.
Traditional remedies
For Ketu, tradition suggests worship of Ganesha, recitation of the Ketu mantra, charity to the needy, care for stray dogs, and regular meditation. Cat’s eye (lehsunia) is Ketu’s stone, and like Rahu’s hessonite it is usually suggested only with caution. Remedies are traditional practices, not guarantees.
After Ketu
Ketu’s period is followed by Venus’s 20-year Mahadasha, which often turns attention back toward relationships, comfort and enjoyment. Many people find that what Ketu cleared away makes room for what Venus brings. Your free Kundli shows the dates of each Mahadasha and sub-period and where Ketu sits in your chart.
