Guru Mahadasha: The 16-Year Jupiter Period

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 28 October 2026

✨

Jupiter, called Guru or Brihaspati, rules a Mahadasha of 16 years. It follows Rahu’s 18-year period and is followed by Saturn’s 19 years. You are born in Jupiter’s period if the Moon was in Punarvasu, Vishakha or Purva Bhadrapada, the three nakshatras Jupiter rules.

Jupiter is the greatest natural benefic in Jyotish. It stands for wisdom, teachers, children, faith, ethics, wealth and expansion. Its period is widely looked forward to, and often with reason — but a Jupiter Mahadasha is not automatically good, and understanding why helps you read your own.

Because it follows Rahu’s period, the start of a Jupiter Mahadasha often feels like a change of pace: after Rahu’s restless ambition, Jupiter tends to bring a wish for stability, meaning and guidance. Many people find it a time to consolidate what they gained, or learned, during the Rahu years.

Common themes of the period

  • Study, teaching, advice and a growing reputation for good judgement.
  • Marriage, children and family events, especially for those of the right age.
  • Growth in income and savings, often through steady and ethical work.
  • Interest in religion, philosophy, pilgrimage and guidance from elders.
  • Optimism and generosity — and, when Jupiter is afflicted, overconfidence or overspending.

Jupiter by house

  • 1st house: directional strength; good health, optimism and respect from others.
  • 2nd house: family, savings and good speech; often a comfortable period for money.
  • 4th house: home, vehicles, property and education; peace in the family.
  • 5th house: children, study, creativity and devotion.
  • 7th house: marriage or a good partner; its aspect falls on the Lagna.
  • 9th house: fortune, teachers, higher learning and pilgrimage.
  • 10th house: respected work, often advisory, legal, financial or educational.
  • 11th house: gains, friends and fulfilled hopes.
  • 6th, 8th and 12th houses: mixed results — service, research and spiritual life can grow, but health, debt or expenses need care.

Remember that Jupiter also aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from where it sits, so its period benefits those houses too.

When Jupiter is less helpful

A natural benefic can still rule difficult houses for a particular Lagna. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. For a Taurus ascendant, for example, those are the 8th and 11th houses, so Jupiter is not counted among the functional benefics for that Lagna, and its period may bring gains alongside sudden changes. For Sagittarius and Pisces ascendants Jupiter is the Lagna lord, and for Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio it rules a trikona (the 5th or 9th house), which generally favours its period.

Strength matters too. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. Combust (too close to the Sun), debilitated without cancellation, or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, Jupiter may promise more than it delivers. Jupiter has directional strength in the 1st house, and in a kendra it is considered especially protective.

If you were born in Jupiter’s period, only the balance remaining at birth is counted, so the first Mahadasha of life can be much shorter than 16 years.

The nine sub-periods

Jupiter’s period begins with its own sub-period. Each lasts 16 × the sub-lord’s years ÷ 120, which gives approximately:

  • Jupiter–Jupiter: about 2 years 2 months.
  • Jupiter–Saturn: about 2 years 6 months.
  • Jupiter–Mercury: about 2 years 3 months.
  • Jupiter–Ketu: about 11 months.
  • Jupiter–Venus: about 2 years 8 months.
  • Jupiter–Sun: about 10 months.
  • Jupiter–Moon: about 1 year 4 months.
  • Jupiter–Mars: about 11 months.
  • Jupiter–Rahu: about 2 years 5 months.

The Sun, Moon and Mars are natural friends of Jupiter, so those sub-periods are usually read favourably. Mercury and Venus are natural enemies of Jupiter, and their sub-periods are often read as more mixed. Jupiter–Rahu, the last sub-period, combines expansion with Rahu’s restlessness and is commonly handled with some care.

Traditional remedies

Where Jupiter needs support, traditional practices include worship of Vishnu or Dakshinamurthy on Thursdays, recitation of the Guru mantra, respect for teachers and elders, and charity of yellow items, turmeric or books. Yellow sapphire (pukhraj) is Jupiter’s stone and is considered suitable mainly where Jupiter is a functional benefic for the Lagna. These are traditional practices, not guarantees.
