Which Gemstones Suit Each Lagna (Ascendant)
By VedicsAstro Editorial · 28 October 2026
In Jyotish a gemstone strengthens the planet it belongs to. It does not calm a difficult planet; it makes it stronger. So the safe way to choose a stone starts from the Lagna (ascendant), which decides which houses each planet rules in your chart. Planets that rule good houses for your Lagna are its functional benefics, and their stones are the usual candidates.
The nine gems
- Sun: ruby (manik).
- Moon: pearl (moti).
- Mars: red coral (moonga).
- Mercury: emerald (panna).
- Jupiter: yellow sapphire (pukhraj).
- Venus: diamond (heera).
- Saturn: blue sapphire (neelam).
- Rahu: hessonite (gomed).
- Ketu: cat’s eye (lehsunia).
The general rule
The Lagna lord is always treated as a benefic for its own chart, and the lords of the 5th and 9th houses — the trikonas — are the most auspicious. A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona is the yogakaraka, the strongest benefic of all. A planet that rules the 6th, 8th or 12th house without also ruling a trikona or the Lagna is usually avoided. Below, for each Lagna, are the Lagna lord and the trikona lords, which most astrologers consider the safest starting points.
Lagna by Lagna
- Aries: Mars (Lagna lord) — red coral; Sun (5th) — ruby; Jupiter (9th) — yellow sapphire.
- Taurus: Venus (Lagna lord, also the 6th) — diamond; Mercury (5th) — emerald; Saturn (9th and 10th, the yogakaraka) — blue sapphire, with the usual caution.
- Gemini: Mercury (Lagna lord) — emerald; Venus (5th) — diamond; Saturn (9th, also the 8th) — blue sapphire only with care.
- Cancer: Moon (Lagna lord) — pearl; Mars (5th and 10th, the yogakaraka) — red coral. Jupiter rules the 9th but also the 6th, so yellow sapphire is debated.
- Leo: Sun (Lagna lord) — ruby; Mars (4th and 9th, the yogakaraka) — red coral; Jupiter (5th, also the 8th) — yellow sapphire.
- Virgo: Mercury (Lagna lord) — emerald; Venus (9th) — diamond. Saturn rules the 5th but also the 6th, so blue sapphire is debated.
- Libra: Venus (Lagna lord) — diamond; Saturn (4th and 5th, the yogakaraka) — blue sapphire, with the usual caution. Mercury rules the 9th but also the 12th.
- Scorpio: Mars (Lagna lord) — red coral; Jupiter (5th) — yellow sapphire; Moon (9th) — pearl.
- Sagittarius: Jupiter (Lagna lord) — yellow sapphire; Mars (5th) — red coral; Sun (9th) — ruby.
- Capricorn: Saturn (Lagna lord) — blue sapphire, with caution; Venus (5th and 10th, the yogakaraka) — diamond; Mercury (9th) — emerald.
- Aquarius: Saturn (Lagna lord) — blue sapphire, with caution; Venus (4th and 9th, the yogakaraka) — diamond. Mercury rules the 5th but also the 8th, so emerald is debated.
- Pisces: Jupiter (Lagna lord) — yellow sapphire; Moon (5th) — pearl; Mars (9th) — red coral.
Where a planet rules one good and one difficult house, astrologers differ, and the planet’s placement in your chart usually settles the question. Rahu and Ketu rule no sign, so their stones are not part of this table; they are suggested, if at all, from their placement and Dasha.
The Lagna is only the start
- Strength: a benefic that is already strong rarely needs a stone; a weak one — debilitated, combust or in the 6th, 8th or 12th house — is the usual candidate.
- Dasha: a stone is often suggested when the planet’s Mahadasha or sub-period is running or about to begin.
- Combinations: stones of planets that are natural enemies, such as ruby with blue sapphire, are traditionally not worn together.
- Trial: blue sapphire in particular is traditionally worn on trial for a few days before it is kept.
How our Kundli suggests stones
The gemstone section of your free Kundli starts from the stone of your Lagna lord, then adds the stones of functional benefics that are weak in your chart, and the stone of your Moon sign’s lord, with the metal, finger, day and mantra for each. It explains why each stone was chosen, so you can weigh the reasoning yourself.
A sensible view
A gemstone is a traditional remedy, not a promise of any result, and not a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. Natural, untreated stones can be expensive; tradition allows alternatives (uparatna), and mantra, charity and steady effort are remedies that cost nothing. Our guide to choosing gemstones the right way covers weight, metal, finger and the day to start wearing one.
