Wearing Gemstones the Right Way

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 22 April 2026

💎

Gemstones (ratna) are among the most popular Vedic remedies — but they are not one-size-fits-all. In Jyotish a gemstone is understood to strengthen the planet it belongs to, not to calm it. That means the wrong stone, worn confidently, can amplify a difficult planet just as easily as a helpful one. The first question is never “which stone is lucky?” but “which planet in my chart should be made stronger?”.

The nine gems (Navaratna)

  • Sun — Ruby (Manik)
  • Moon — Pearl (Moti)
  • Mars — Red Coral (Moonga)
  • Mercury — Emerald (Panna)
  • Jupiter — Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
  • Venus — Diamond (Heera); white sapphire is a common substitute
  • Saturn — Blue Sapphire (Neelam)
  • Rahu — Hessonite garnet (Gomed)
  • Ketu — Cat’s eye chrysoberyl (Lehsunia)

First principles

  • Strengthen functional benefics, never functional malefics
  • The ascendant lord’s stone is generally safe
  • Blue Sapphire must be trial-worn for 3 days
  • Avoid clashing combinations (e.g. Ruby with Blue Sapphire)

A functional benefic is a planet that owns good houses for your particular Lagna — the trines (1st, 5th, 9th) above all. A functional malefic owns the 6th, 8th or 12th. The same planet changes role with the ascendant: Mars is a yogakaraka for Cancer and Leo Lagnas, owning a kendra and a trikona, but owns the 6th and 11th for a Gemini Lagna and the 3rd and 8th for Virgo. That is why the same red coral can suit one person and not another.

When a stone is recommended

Astrologers usually suggest a gem when a benefic planet is weak — in a debilitated or enemy sign, combust near the Sun, or with low Shadbala — and its Dasha is running or about to start. A strong benefic rarely needs help. A weak planet that owns difficult houses is better supported with mantra, charity and service than with a stone, because the stone would also strengthen the difficult houses it rules.

Weight, metal, finger and day

Traditional guidance covers each detail. A stone should be natural, untreated and free of visible cracks, and touch the skin through an open-backed setting. Common practice sets Ruby and Red Coral in gold or copper on the ring finger, Pearl in silver on the little finger, Emerald on the little finger, Yellow Sapphire in gold on the index finger, and Blue Sapphire and Hessonite on the middle finger. It is first worn on the planet’s weekday — Sunday for the Sun, Monday for the Moon, Thursday for Jupiter, Saturday for Saturn — during its hora, after the stone is washed in raw milk or Ganga water and the planet’s mantra is chanted. Weight is often given in ratti, with a common minimum of three to five carats for the main gems, but tradition varies and a good astrologer explains their reasoning.

A gemstone is a lens — it concentrates whatever the planet already promises.

Signs to stop

Saturn’s Blue Sapphire and Rahu’s Hessonite are known for fast results, good or bad, so they are usually tried for a few days first — kept under the pillow or worn briefly. Sudden accidents, quarrels, loss or disturbed sleep in that time are read as a sign to remove it. Never combine stones of planets that are natural enemies, such as Ruby with Blue Sapphire or Diamond, or Pearl with Hessonite or Cat’s eye.

Gemstones are one remedy among many

Classical texts describe mantra, charity (daana), fasting, worship and good conduct as remedies long before gems. They cost little, cannot harm, and work on character as well as circumstance. Treat a gemstone as an option to consider after the whole chart has been read, not as a shortcut, and remember that no remedy is a guarantee. Your Kundli shows each planet’s dignity, the houses it owns for your Lagna and its Shadbala strength, which are the facts any gemstone advice should rest on.
