Yogas: Raja, Dhana, Gajakesari and More

In Jyotish a yoga is a specific combination of planets — by house, sign, aspect or ownership — that classical texts link to a particular result. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika and Saravali describe hundreds. A few appear in almost every reading, and knowing them helps you make sense of a chart report.

Raja Yogas

Raja Yogas, “royal combinations”, bring status and authority. The basic rule is a connection between the lord of a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and the lord of a trikona (1st, 5th or 9th). The connection can be a conjunction, a mutual aspect, or an exchange of signs. The strongest is between the 9th and 10th lords, the lords of fortune and action, called Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. A single planet that owns both a kendra and a trikona — Saturn for Taurus and Libra Lagnas, Mars for Cancer and Leo, Venus for Capricorn and Aquarius — is a yogakaraka and forms a Raja Yoga by itself.

Dhana Yogas

Dhana Yogas indicate wealth. They form when the lords of the wealth houses — the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th — combine with each other or with the Lagna lord. Jupiter and Venus well placed in these houses strengthen them.

Gajakesari Yoga

Gajakesari — “elephant and lion” — forms when Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon: the same sign, or the 4th, 7th or 10th from it. It is linked with intelligence, respect and lasting reputation. Because Jupiter is in a kendra from the Moon about a third of the time, the yoga is common, and its strength depends on the dignity of both planets and the houses involved.

Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas

Five “great person” yogas form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Lagna:

  • Ruchaka (Mars): courage, leadership, physical strength
  • Bhadra (Mercury): intellect, eloquence, business skill
  • Hamsa (Jupiter): wisdom, virtue, respect
  • Malavya (Venus): beauty, art, comfort, a happy marriage
  • Shasha (Saturn): authority over people, organisation, endurance

Other common yogas

  • Budhaditya: Sun and Mercury together, linked with intelligence and skill. Very common, since Mercury is never far from the Sun.
  • Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga: the cancellation of a planet’s debilitation, for example when the lord of its debilitation sign is in a kendra. It can turn early weakness into later success.
  • Viparita Raja Yoga: lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th placed in each other’s houses, giving success that comes out of difficulty.
  • Parivartana Yoga: two planets in each other’s signs, linking the houses they own.
  • Kemadruma Yoga: no planets in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon, associated with loneliness, but cancelled in many charts.

A yoga is a promise, not a guarantee

A yoga gives its results only to the degree that its planets are strong — in good signs, not combust, not heavily afflicted — and mostly during the Dashas of the planets that form it. A Raja Yoga between weak planets in difficult houses may show as a modest promotion rather than fame. This is why lists of yogas found by software should be read together with planetary strength and timing.

Your Kundli detects the classical yogas in your chart, explains how each is formed, and shows the strength of the planets involved.
