Reading Career in the Birth Chart
By VedicsAstro Editorial · 27 October 2026
Career is one of the most common questions put to an astrologer. Jyotish does not usually name a single profession; it describes the kind of work that suits a person, the field in which they are likely to rise, and when change is likely. The judgement is built from several layers.
The 10th house
The 10th house, Karma Bhava, is the house of action, status and profession. Planets placed in it show the energies that dominate public life: the Sun gives authority and government links, Mars engineering, police, sport or surgery, Mercury communication, commerce and accounts, Jupiter teaching, law, finance and advice, Venus arts, design, hospitality and luxury goods, Saturn large organisations, labour, mining, land and long-term service. Rahu in the 10th often brings unconventional or foreign work and technology.
The 10th lord
The planet ruling the 10th sign carries career matters to the house it occupies. A 10th lord in the 7th suggests business and partnership; in the 9th, teaching, law, religion or work linked to the father; in the 11th, gains through networks and large incomes; in the 12th, foreign countries, hospitals, ashrams or behind-the-scenes work; in the 6th, service, medicine, litigation or competition. Its strength decides how far the person rises.
Supporting houses
- 2nd house — earnings, savings and the family business.
- 6th house — employment and service; strong in people who work for others.
- 7th house — business, trade and partnerships; strong in self-employed charts.
- 11th house — income, gains and the fulfilment of ambition.
- The Lagna and its lord — the energy and confidence the person brings to work.
The Dashamsa (D10)
The tenth divisional chart refines the career picture. Each sign is divided into ten parts of 3 degrees, and the resulting chart is read for professional success, promotions and setbacks. A planet that is strong in both the birth chart and the D10 tends to dominate the career. Because the D10 Lagna changes about every twelve minutes, it needs an accurate birth time.
The Amatyakaraka
In the Jaimini system, the planet with the second-highest degree in its sign (ignoring the sign itself) is the Amatyakaraka, the “minister” of the chart, and it signifies career and the means of livelihood. Its sign and house, and the planets with it, are read alongside the 10th house.
Timing changes
New jobs, promotions and career changes usually come in the Dasha or Antardasha of the 10th lord, of planets in the 10th, of the Amatyakaraka, or of the lords of the 2nd, 6th and 11th houses. Saturn’s transit over the 10th house or its lord brings responsibility and restructuring; Jupiter’s transit there or its aspect brings recognition and opportunity. When both are active together, a significant change is likely.

No single factor decides a career. A chart with a strong 10th house but a weak Lagna lord may show ability that is not fully used; a modest 10th with a powerful Raja Yoga may still rise high.
