Understanding Your Moon Sign (Rashi)

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 10 May 2026

🌙

Ask most people their “sign” and they’ll give you the Sun sign of Western astrology. In Jyotish, the more important placement is the Moon — your Rashi — because the Moon governs the mind, emotions and how you experience daily life. When an Indian newspaper prints horoscopes, or a family priest asks for your rashi, it is the Moon sign they mean.

Why the Moon leads

The Moon (Chandra) is the fastest-moving graha and the karaka (significator) of the mind, or manas. Everything in a chart is experienced through the mind, so a strong, well-placed Moon steadies the whole chart, while an afflicted Moon can make even good placements feel difficult. The Moon also connects the chart to time: your Vimshottari Dasha — the great planetary cycle that times the events of your life — is calculated from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth.

  • Emotional temperament and instincts
  • Mother and nurturing
  • Daily mental state, habits and sleep
  • The starting point of your dasha sequence
  • The reference point for transits such as Sade Sati

Moon sign, Sun sign and Lagna

A Vedic chart has three anchors. The Lagna (ascendant) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth; it describes the body and the overall direction of life, and the twelve houses are counted from it. The Sun sign describes the soul, authority and the father. The Moon sign describes the mind and feelings. Because the Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, it changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days, so people born a day apart often have different rashis, while the Sun stays in one sign for a month.

Note too that the Vedic Moon sign is sidereal. It is measured against the fixed stars, about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, so many people find their Vedic Sun and Moon signs are one sign earlier than they expected.

Reading the Moon in your chart

Astrologers judge the Moon by its sign, house, phase and companions. The Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, and owns Cancer. A Moon close to full (Shukla Paksha, waxing) is considered stronger than a dark Moon near Amavasya. Jupiter with or aspecting the Moon forms Gajakesari Yoga, associated with wisdom and good reputation, while Saturn, Rahu or Ketu with the Moon can bring worry or restlessness that benefits from routine and practice.

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): quick feelings, enthusiasm, a need to act.
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): steady, practical emotions, comfort in routine.
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): processing feelings by talking and thinking.
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): deep, intuitive and protective feelings.

Your Janma Nakshatra

Within the rashi, the nakshatra the Moon occupies — your Janma Nakshatra or birth star — refines the picture. Each of the 27 nakshatras has its own deity, symbol and ruling planet, and it is used to name children, to match horoscopes for marriage, and to choose auspicious days through Tarabalam. Two people with the same Moon sign can feel quite different because their Moons sit in different nakshatras.

Finding your Rashi

You need your date, time and place of birth. Generate your free Kundli to see the exact sign, degree and nakshatra the Moon occupied at your birth — that is your true Vedic Rashi, and the lens through which the rest of the chart is read. If you do not know your birth time, the Moon sign is usually still certain unless the Moon changed sign that day; the Kundli form shows when that happens.
