Sade Sati: Saturn’s Seven and a Half Years

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 27 October 2026

🪐

Sade Sati — literally “seven and a half” — is the best-known transit in Vedic astrology and the one people fear most. It is the period in which Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so the three together last about seven and a half years.

How often it comes

Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go round the zodiac, so Sade Sati returns roughly every thirty years. Most people meet it two or three times in a lifetime: once in youth, once in middle age and once in later life. Its effect depends on the stage of life — the first often touches education and family, the second career and responsibility, the third health and letting go.

The three phases

  • Rising phase (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon): expenses, travel, sleep and a sense that old arrangements are ending.
  • Peak phase (Saturn over the Moon): the most intense part. Pressure on the mind, heavier duties, and the testing of relationships and plans.
  • Setting phase (Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon): family and finances come into focus; the results of the effort made in the earlier phases begin to arrive.

Who is in Sade Sati now

Saturn entered sidereal Pisces on 29 March 2025 and stays there until 2027. That puts three Moon signs in Sade Sati: Aquarius in its setting phase, Pisces in its peak phase, and Aries in its rising phase. Capricorn’s Sade Sati ended in March 2025. When Saturn moves into Aries in 2027, Aquarius will be free, and Taurus will enter its rising phase. Because these dates are sidereal, check your Vedic Moon sign rather than a Western sun sign.

Dhaiya: the two-and-a-half-year transits

Saturn in the 4th sign from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) and in the 8th (Ashtama Shani) are shorter difficult transits called Dhaiya. Ashtama Shani in particular is associated with obstacles and health matters and is often considered as testing as the peak of Sade Sati.

Why it is not the same for everyone

Sade Sati is a transit over the Moon, but its results depend on Saturn’s role in your own chart. For Taurus and Libra Lagnas, Saturn is the yogakaraka, and many people with these ascendants rise during Sade Sati. Saturn exalted in Libra or in its own signs, Capricorn and Aquarius, also gives better results. Astrologers check the Ashtakavarga too: if the signs Saturn is crossing have many bindus, the transit is milder. And the Dasha running at the time matters more than the transit itself.

Saturn takes nothing that was truly yours. He removes what was never going to last, and rewards what was built with patience.

How to meet it

Saturn is the planet of discipline, service, time and truth. The traditional remedies follow its nature: steady work without shortcuts, honesty, respect for elders and workers, care for those who have less, and patience. Devotional practices include worship of Hanuman and Lord Shani on Saturdays, the Shani mantra or Hanuman Chalisa, lighting a sesame-oil lamp, and charity of black sesame, mustard oil, iron or blankets. Blue sapphire should not be worn simply because Sade Sati is running; it suits only charts where Saturn is a functional benefic.
