When Will I Marry? How Jyotish Predicts the Timing

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 27 October 2026

💍

The timing of marriage is one of the questions Jyotish is most often asked, and one where its method is clearest. An astrologer works in three steps: first, does the chart promise marriage and of what kind; second, which Dasha periods can deliver it; third, which transits trigger it within those periods.

Step one: the promise

The 7th house, its lord and Venus (and Jupiter in a woman’s chart, by tradition) describe marriage. A 7th house with benefic influence and a well-placed lord promises a timely, supportive marriage. Saturn connected to the 7th house or its lord commonly delays marriage, often until after the late twenties, but tends to make it stable. Rahu can bring an unconventional or inter-community marriage; Mars connected to the 7th is checked for Mangal Dosha. The Navamsa (D9), the marriage chart, must agree: its 7th house and the condition of Venus there confirm or weaken the birth chart’s promise.

Step two: the Dasha

Marriage usually happens in the Mahadasha or Antardasha of a planet connected with the 7th house: the 7th lord, a planet in the 7th, a planet aspecting it, Venus, the lord of the sign the 7th lord occupies in the Navamsa, or the Darakaraka of Jaimini astrology (the planet with the lowest degree in its sign). Rahu and Ketu give the results of the sign lord they occupy, so their periods also count if they are linked to the 7th. Within a favourable Mahadasha, the Antardasha of such a planet narrows the window to a year or two.

Step three: the double transit

A widely used rule, popularised by K. N. Rao, is the double transit: an event tends to happen when both Jupiter and Saturn influence the relevant house or its lord by transit, through position or aspect, at the same time. For marriage, that is the 7th house or the 7th lord, counted from the Lagna and often from the Moon too. Jupiter aspects the 5th, 7th and 9th signs from itself and Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th, so the window opens for some months at a time. A favourable Dasha plus the double transit is a strong indication.

What delays marriage

  • Saturn in the 7th or aspecting the 7th lord or Venus.
  • The 7th lord in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th) or debilitated.
  • Venus combust, debilitated or hemmed between malefics.
  • A long Dasha of a planet unconnected with the 7th house during the usual marriage years.

Delay is not denial. Most of these combinations postpone marriage rather than prevent it, and many people with them marry happily later than their friends.
