Mangal Dosha Cancellation Rules (Dosha Bhanga)

By VedicsAstro Editorial · 28 October 2026

♂️

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik or Kuja Dosha, is the condition in which Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the chart. Because that is six houses out of twelve, roughly half of all charts have it from the Lagna alone. That is one reason tradition gives so much attention to its cancellation (bhanga): the dosha was never meant to apply to half of humanity with full force.

How severity is graded

Our dosha check counts the houses from the Lagna and grades the dosha by house. Mars in the 7th or 8th house is treated as the strongest form, Mars in the 4th or 12th as moderate, and Mars in the 1st or 2nd as mild. Many astrologers also count the same houses from the Moon and from Venus, and give the most weight to the Lagna; some North Indian authors leave out the 2nd house. These differences are why two reports can disagree.

Cancellations our dosha check applies

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn). The dosha is then treated as mild.
  • Jupiter’s aspect on Mars — Jupiter in the 5th, 7th or 9th sign from Mars. This lowers the severity.
  • Venus in the same sign as Mars, which is read as reducing the negative effects.
  • Saturn’s aspect on Mars, which is read as giving some relief.

When one of these is present, the result names it, so you can see exactly why the severity was set as it was.

Two examples

Take a chart with Cancer Lagna and Mars in Capricorn. Capricorn is the 7th house from Cancer, so by house the dosha would be in its strongest form. But Capricorn is the sign of Mars’s exaltation, so our check treats it as mild and names the reason.

Now take Leo Lagna with Mars in Pisces, the 8th house — again the strongest form by house. If Jupiter is in Cancer, the 5th sign from Mars, Jupiter aspects Mars, and our check lowers the severity, again naming the reason. In both cases the label “Manglik” on its own would have given a much worse picture than the full reading.

Other rules found in the tradition

Astrologers also use further rules that our check does not apply automatically. They appear in many modern lists, but the lists vary between authors and regions, so treat them as tradition rather than as fixed law.

  • Sign-based exceptions for particular houses — for example, Mars in the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, or in the 12th in Taurus or Libra, is excused in some lists.
  • Mars in Leo or Aquarius, which some authors treat as cancelling the dosha in any of the six houses.
  • Jupiter or the Moon joined with Mars, or Jupiter strong in a kendra.
  • Both partners having Mangal Dosha of similar strength, which is widely read as neutralising it for that match.
  • The view that the effect weakens after the age of 28, which our dosha page also mentions; this is a popular belief rather than a classical rule.

Why matching matters more than the label

The question tradition actually asks is not “is this person Manglik?” but “how do these two charts fit together?”. That is why astrologers compare the Mars placement in both charts, weigh the 7th house, its lord, Venus and the Navamsa, and read the Ashtakoot (Guna Milan) score alongside the dosha. Our Compatibility tool calculates the 36-point Ashtakoot score from the two Moon positions; Mangal Dosha is a separate check made from each person’s full chart.

Remedies and perspective

Traditional remedies include recitation of the Mangal mantra on Tuesdays, worship of Hanuman or Kartikeya, charity of red lentils or jaggery, and in stronger cases the symbolic Kumbh Vivah ceremony before the wedding. Red coral is suggested only when Mars is a functional benefic for the Lagna. These are traditional practices, not guarantees. Mangal Dosha alone should never be the reason a good match is turned down, and no single placement decides whether a marriage will be happy.
