How numerology works, and how to read your numbers
Numerology turns the letters of your name and the digits of your birth date into a small set of single numbers, each read as a theme in your character. It is a separate system from Jyotish: a Vedic birth chart is calculated from the positions of the planets at the moment you were born, while numerology works only with the date and the name. Many Indian families use the two side by side, and Indian numerology (Anka Jyotisha) links each number to one of the nine grahas.
The five core numbers
- Life Path — the sum of your full date of birth, reduced to one digit. It is read as the main direction and lessons of your life, and it never changes.
- Destiny (Expression) — the sum of every letter of your full birth name. It describes natural abilities and the kind of work you tend to do well.
- Soul Urge — the vowels of your name only. It is read as what you want inwardly, often different from how you appear.
- Personality — the consonants of your name. It describes the first impression you give to others.
- Birthday — the day of the month you were born, reduced. It is treated as a single gift or skill.
Each number is reduced by adding its digits until one digit remains, so 1987 becomes 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, and 25 becomes 7. The exceptions are 11, 22 and 33, the master numbers, which this calculator keeps unreduced because they are read as stronger forms of 2, 4 and 6.
Pythagorean, Chaldean, Lo Shu and Personal Year
The tabs above switch between four methods. Pythagorean numerology gives letters the values 1 to 9 in alphabet order (A = 1, B = 2 … I = 9, J = 1 again) and is the most common system today. Chaldean numerology is older and gives letters the values 1 to 8 by their sound; 9 is never assigned to a letter, and it is usually applied to the name you actually use rather than the full birth name. The Lo Shu grid places the digits of your birth date into a three-by-three square and reads which numbers are repeated and which are missing. The Personal Year number adds your birth day and month to the current calendar year and is read as the theme of that year; adding the current month to it gives the Personal Month.
The numbers and their planets
In Indian numerology each root number is ruled by a graha, and its meaning borrows from that planet’s nature in Jyotish:
- 1 — Sun (Surya): leadership, independence, self-confidence
- 2 — Moon (Chandra): sensitivity, care, imagination
- 3 — Jupiter (Guru): learning, teaching, optimism
- 4 — Rahu: unconventional thinking, sudden change, hard work
- 5 — Mercury (Budha): communication, trade, quick thinking
- 6 — Venus (Shukra): love, beauty, comfort, harmony
- 7 — Ketu: inner search, detachment, research
- 8 — Saturn (Shani): discipline, patience, slow and lasting results
- 9 — Mars (Mangal): energy, courage, drive
Reading your result sensibly
Read the five numbers together rather than one at a time. A Life Path of 8 with a Soul Urge of 2, for example, describes someone who works steadily toward long goals but needs emotional security along the way. When numbers repeat across the five, that theme is stronger. Numerology describes tendencies; it does not predict events, and changing the spelling of a name changes the Destiny number but not the Life Path. For questions about timing — marriage, career change, a good date to begin something — use your Kundli and its Dasha periods, which are calculated from the actual sky at your birth.
